Owen Neistat was composed in the reform tradition of Judaism. He dropped out of high school during his sophomore year at age 17 and didn’t return to college, nor graduate. It was during this period that Neistat chose to move to New York City.

Before going to New York City, Neistat worked as a dishwasher in a fish restaurant and was a short-order cook at Mystic, Connecticut.

In 2001, Neistat and his brother started working with artist Tom Sachs, finally earning a series of movies about the artist’s sculptures and installations.

Neistat first gained international exposure in 2003 to get a three-minute movie titled iPod’s Dirty Secret, criticizing Apple for not using a battery replacement program for their iPod line of portable media players.

The movie received nationwide media attention and attracted broad attention to the provider’s policy towards iPod battery replacements. He admitted his frustration with working in a team environment and as a supervisor and said he started to remove himself from a supervisory role beginning in the summer of 2017. Neistat went on to say he blamed himself for the collapse and was sad that members of the Beme media group would no longer be used by CNN.

He removed the video from his YouTube station at 9:30 am. Then he uploaded a considerably shorter and revised movie, “Moving from Beme”, in which he downplayed the references to his insecurities and flaws in the previously uploaded and uploaded a video.
